Iftar Dinner & Movie @ AANM
Ramadan Mubarak! Across the U.S., Muslim Americans, including many Arab Americans, are observing the holy month of Ramadan. A sunrise-to-sunset fast is an integral part of Ramadan, and breaking the fast with special foods shared with family and friends is a beloved tradition. Muslims and non-Muslims alike are welcome to enjoy a screening of the multiple award-winning 2008 film Lemon Tree (right) at the AANM followed by an iftar dinner in its dramatic Community Courtyard this Thursday, Sept. 2. Jesus “Chuy” Negrete is founder/director of the Mexican Cultural Institute, an engaging teller of tales and master narrator of the Mexican experience through poetic song and corridos (running-verse ballads). Film: Tea on the Axis of Evil @ UM - Dearborn
Join director/producer Jean Marie Offenbacher (right) for a free screening and discussion of her award-winning 2009 documentary Tea on the Axis of Evil at 6 p.m. Wed., Sept. 15 at 1030 CASL Building on the University of Michigan – Dearborn campus. The film examines contemporary Syrian culture as well as the attitudes of Syria’s people – a vibrant, educated and tolerant population – while also challenging stereotypes about gender roles in the Arab World. Arab American Book Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C.
You are invited to celebrate the winning authors and titles of the 2010 Arab American Book Award at an 8 p.m. ceremony at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C. The Arab American Book Award program encourages the publication and excellence of books that preserve and advance the understanding, knowledge and resources of the Arab American community by celebrating the thoughts and lives of Arab Americans. SURA Arts Academy Student Photography Exhibition
It’s the 10th anniversary of the AANM’s beloved, free, after-school program for youth! SURA Arts Academy – winner of one of just 15 prestigious 2008 Coming Up Taller Awards from the Presidents Council on the Arts and the Humanities – has touched hundreds of students in metro Detroit, some of whom have gone on to pursue degrees and careers in photography. This exhibition features student work from the 2010 sessions, with a special look back at the best photos from past years. In the Lower Level Gallery through Oct. 31; free w/ Museum admission. Hawaii’s Alfred Shaheen: Fabric to Fashion
In the mid-20th century, Lebanese American Alfred Shaheen wed technological innovation to socially responsible business practices in the service of revitalizing Pacific Island/Asian textile traditions. He forged a fusion fashion design aesthetic now recognized worldwide as a visual marker – not only of a transnational Hawaiian culture – but of a West Coast "American" lifestyle that is informal, environmentally aware and multicultural. This exhibition, created by the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, features dozens of examples of Shaheen textile and garment designs and archival images that shed light on Shaheen’s unique design, manufacturing and marketing philosophies. In the Main Floor Gallery through March 13, 2011; free with Museum admission.
