Calligraphy is known as 'beautiful handwriting', and in Arabic it also means the 'art of the pen' & 'the geometry of the spirit'. Beautifully illustrated in Arabic Calligraphy this mug (front & back view pictured above) designed by Dr. Fayeq Oweis is a visual expression of the beauty of the art. The English translation I am from here, I am from there, I am Arab American, proud of my identity, education, culture, heritage and my roots are from the cradle of civilization is expressed in royal blue on a field of white.
Fayeq Oweis, an Arab American artist & educator, received his Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies with Concentration on Arabic & Islamic Studies form the Union Institute & University. He currently teaches Arabic Language & Culture at Santa Clara University in California. He has participated in art exhibits in California, Minnesota, Washington DC, & Florida. He designed the exterior entranceway murals and the calligraphy of the dome at the Arab American National Museum and authored the book Encyclopedia of Arab American Artists and The Pocket Guide to Arabic Script (available in our book and poster collection).
