Product Details for Traditional Bamboo Nay Flute
Nay flutes are the only wind instrument played in Arab music. They are considered to be the perfect wind instrument since its richly harmonic tone, mellow and slightly husky, more closely approximated the sound of the human voice than any other instrument. The Egyptians use of the Nay flute dates back to the third century.
The flute's name comes from the Persian word "nay", meaning reed. Straight bamboo pipe with 6 front holes and one back hole. Approx size 24 inch made of homegrown bamboo and is signed by the musician/artisan, Nadeem Dlaikan, in Arabic.
Lebanese born Nadeem Dlaikan (pictured above) studied under Naim Bitar, the country's premier flutist. Now living in Michigan, Dlaikan grows the bamboo he uses to make the mijwiz (double reed), munjarah (5 hole, single reed) and the nay (9 holes, single reed) flute he plays. A virtuoso nay player, he was honored with the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship in 2002 and the Michigan Heritage Award in 1994. His enchanting music can be heard in the AANM's courtyard video display. Nadeem has provided a small stock of his exclusive handmade flutes to the AANM so that you too can enjoy their delightful sounds.
