Concert tickets are $25, $50, $75, $100 and $150. A Patron ticket at $200 offers valet parking, preferred seating and a cocktail reception. A $500 Benefactor ticket is all that plus a festive October 20 Benefactor Evening, “Cairo By Night,” in Bloomfield Hills. Artifact Spotlight: Cash Register
Cha-ching! Millions of transactions were rung up on this circa 1920 National Cash Register by members of the Zainea family of Detroit, Michigan. The Zaineas first operated a market in Detroit in the early 20th century. Their descendants have gone on to run numerous businesses, including downtown Detroit’s popular Majestic Theatre Center, comprised of two live music venues, two restaurants and the oldest active bowling alley in the U.S. The cash register was donated to the AANM by Joe Zainea, who says it was used in various family-run enterprises through the 1950s. It’s on display in the Museum’s Living in America exhibit. Want to donate an artifact? Click HERE.
Good Service Matters at AANM
In Arab culture, hospitality is taken very seriously. At the Arab American National Museum and its parent company, ACCESS, this tradition plays out not only in the services we provide, but in the way we provide those services. So, we’d like to hear about your experiences, good or bad, at the Museum. Please email us at aanm@accesscommunity.org or call our Comment Line at 313-297-4531 and let us know how we’re doing.
September 20:
Ford Comerica Global Thursdays: Lunasa
Ireland’s great 1970s group The Bothy Band inspired this gathering of Ireland’s top contemporary players. Lúnasa use melodic interweaving of wind and string instruments, pairing flutes, fiddle, whistle and pipes in breathtaking configurations. Their inventive arrangements and bass-driven grooves are steering Irish acoustic music into new territory. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the AANM’s Lower Level Auditorium. Tickets are $8 for Museum Members and students; $10 in advance at 313.582.2266; and $12 at the door.
September 20 & 27:
Free Meditation Sessions
Positive response has brought the “Learn to Meditate Series” back to the AANM, with a new start time of 6:15 p.m. Thursdays, through October 18. Come see for yourself why so many people from every culture and walks of life are learning to meditate. Release stress and bring benefits to mind, body and emotions. Become a deeper, brighter person. Look and feel younger. In the Lower Level Classroom. Free and open to the public. Questions? Contact Terry at White Rabbit Resources at 248-227-7595 or tlf157@comcast.net.
September 23 & 30:
Ramadan Free Craft Sundays
Free craftmaking sessions for kids ages 6-12 this month mark the Muslim holiday of Ramadan. On Sept. 23, children will paint pottery with Arabic designs and on Sept. 30, to prepare for the end of Ramadan, it’s a Happy Eid Party, with a greeting card craft and refreshments. No advance registration necessary; call 313.624.0210 with questions.
September 27:
Ford Comerica Global Thursdays: Scott Feiner & Pandeiro Jazz
Combine the rich rhythmic texture of the Brazilian pandeiro – a tunable, sophisticated cousin of the tambourine – with the intensity of New York City jazz, and you get Pandeiro Jazz. The sound produced by this percussion, guitar and saxophone trio impresses audiences with its high energy, musical interaction, and intense grooves. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the AANM’s Lower Level Auditorium. Tickets are $8 for Museum Members and students; $10 in advance at 313.582.2266; and $12 at the door.
September 29: SI Museum Day at AANM
