Book Award Unites Communities

Authors, book lovers, politicians and community members came together to celebrate the winners of the inaugural AANM Book Award ceremony at the Museum September 6. Among those in attendance were Honorable Mention recipients Tim Jon Semmerling and Randa Kayyali, as well as noted author and academician Greg Orfalea. At right is Kayyali (far left) with Mark Horan, Alice Crosetto and Rajinder Garcha, the University of Toledo (OH) librarians who initially conceived of what became the AANM Book Award program. Fashion Show Offers Modest Styles

The Community Courtyard at AANM was filled with bright lights, beat-driven music and stunning style Sunday when Belgium-based La Maison Saouli marked its entry into the North American market with a fashion show. Volunteer models, several from the AANM staff, strutted before an appreciative audience in the fashionable, professional yet modest apparel Karima Saouli created for herself and Muslim women around the world. The made-in-Paris fashions, $30-$150, sold well following the show. Go shopping online at www.saouli.eu. Photo at right courtesy of Millard Berry, Dearborn Press & Guide.

Student Photographers Open Exhibition

Budding young photographers from Dearborn and Detroit were beaming with pride as their friends and family members viewed the SURA Arts Academy student photography exhibition at its opening Saturday at the AANM. Attendees heard a presentation on the free program for middle school students and enjoyed refreshments and a performance by rapper Invincible. The 41 images comprising the SURA exhibition are on display through October 28 in the Lower Level Gallery; a companion virtual exhibition can be viewed HERE. Detroit middle school students are also welcome to enroll in the new SURA session beginning September 18. Call 313.624.0210 or click HERE for registration information.

Artifact Spotlight: Girl Scout Jacket

Yemeni American Nora Abdallah Castillo of Whittier, California spent many happy years as a Girl Scout, as evidenced by this green jacket adorned with 59 patches marking her Scouting accomplishments. She was cited by President Jimmy Carter for earning so many merit badges. In 2003, Castillo donated this jacket, a 1978 Girl Scout Cookie order form, a Girl Scout doll and related artifacts to the AANM. Do you have artifacts to donate? Click HERE to read about how to donate items to the AANM.

New Periodicals Available

We’ve added a few titles to the periodical publications offered at the AANM. New in the lobby area are free copies of the Arab American newspapers The Arab American Times and The Independent Monitor. And in the AANM Library & Resource Center, we now have subscriptions to ALO Hayati, a women’s magazine; Al-Sahafa, an Ohio-based newspaper; and Canvas, a glossy fine-arts magazine published in Dubai. Come take a look!

EVENTS

September 13, 20 & 27:
Free Meditation Sessions

Positive response has brought the “Learn to Meditate Series” back to the AANM, with a new start time of 6:15 p.m. Thursdays, through October 18. Come see for yourself why so many people from every culture and walks of life are learning to meditate. Release stress and bring benefits to mind, body and emotions. Become a deeper, brighter person. September 16, 23 & 30:
Ramadan Free Craft Sundays

Free craftmaking sessions for kids ages 6-12 this month mark the Muslim holiday of Ramadan. On September 16, youngsters will create decorative and functional rope baskets. On Sept. 23, children will paint pottery with Arabic designs and on Sept. 30, to mark the end of Ramadan, it’s a Happy Eid Party, with a greeting card craft and refreshments for the whole family. No advance registration necessary; call 313.624.0210 with questions.

September 20:
Ford Comerica Global Thursdays:
Lunasa

Ireland’s great 1970s group The Bothy Band inspired this gathering of Ireland’s top contemporary players. Lúnasa use melodic interweaving of wind and string instruments, pairing flutes, fiddle, whistle and pipes in breathtaking configurations. Their inventive arrangements and bass-driven grooves are steering Irish acoustic music into new territory. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the AANM’s Lower Level Auditorium. Tickets are $8 for Museum Members and students; $10 in advance; and $12 at the door.

September 27:
Ford Comerica Global Thursdays:                             Scott Feiner & Pandeiro Jazz

Combine the rich rhythmic texture of the Brazilian pandeiro – a tunable, sophisticated cousin of the tambourine – with the intensity of New York City jazz, and you get Pandeiro Jazz. The sound produced by this percussion, guitar and saxophone trio impresses audiences with its high energy, musical interaction, and intense grooves. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the AANM’s Lower Level Auditorium. Tickets are $8 for Museum Members and students; $10 in advance; and $12 at the door.

September 29:
SI Museum Day at AANM

As an Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the AANM is taking part in Smithsonian magazine’s 3rd annual national Museum Day. Last year, museums in 49 states took part in the event, in which free admission is offered to emulate the Smithsonian’s free admission policy in its own institutions. In order to gain free admission to the AANM on Saturday, September 29, visit www.smithsonian.com/museumdaycard to download a special card, good for you and one guest. See you there!
