In the great tradition of West African guitar bands, Niger's Tal National performs intricately interlaced lines of polyrhythmic six-string splendor as multiple vocalists trade lines as intricate as the guitars. Formed in 2000 and hugely popular in Niger, the band has made strong inroads into the west, aided by a new record on the American label Fat Cat, coming this September.
Like Niger itself, Tal National's sound reflects a cultural crossroads, with influences from throughout West Africa and beyond. Its members also represent the diverse ethnic groups within Mali. At home they deliver five-hour sets five days a week, but for Global Fridays audiences, a somewhat shorter yet still irresistible dance-music experience is guaranteed!
